Raby Castle Visit 25th June 2006
Organised by: John Vero
Report and pictures from our special correspondent and ace photographer:
Margaret Knowles.
After a week of what can only be described as indescribable weather, many members of Area 18 breathed a sign of relief that the forecast for Sunday June 25th was to be fine.
Weather forecasters had predicted that there would be calmer conditions over the British Isles, and Sunday would be dry, but overcast and warmer, there may be an occasional shower, but these would be isolated. WHY DID NO ONE TELL THE COUNTY OF DURHAM!!!
Arising on Sunday morning the day was indeed calmer and very pleasant if a little overcast, and with this in mind nine cars met at the Burton Services to commence their day out to Raby Castle. Led by Organiser John Vero, eight Jaguars and an MG commenced up the motorway on our drive to Raby Castle driving through Kirkby Steven and Brough, before winding up and over the Pennines. At this point we encountered some mist, followed by some drizzle, which eventually turned into rain. On our arrival at Raby the rain was still very persistent, although it had not put off many exhibitors, and indeed very many members of the public who had come to see the cars.
A great amount of interest was shown in the Jaguars from Area 18, and at one point John Vero was letting people have their photos taken at the wheel of his E-Type Roadster.
Raby Castle is a lovely venue, with the Castle and gardens to visit in addition to all the classic cars, so it was a great pity that the continuing persistent rain drove people to make an early return home.
